Introduction (5 minutes)
Inform students with teaching material that will be used as well as mode of work. The basic source will be documents that are collected in Ferdo Šišić’s book ‘’Dokumenti o postanku Kraljevine Srba, Hrvata I Slovenaca’’ http://velikirat.nb.rs/items/show/6183 . Beside those documents students will have the opportunity to work with other available material.
Remind students and discuss with them about earlier lessons. Talk about first ideas of unification of Southern Slavs of the XIX century. Remind students about occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and reaction that followed among Southern Slavs, especially in Serbia and Montenegro.
Main part of lecture (30 minutes)
Ask student to read text from mentioned book - page 10 – ‘’Declaration of Royal Serbian Government- 7.dec.1914. http://velikirat.nb.rs/items/show/7245 . This text contains Serbian government war objectives and they are liberation of all Serbs , Croats and Slovenes under the rule of Austro- Hungary. Discuss with students under what circumstances this declaration was made. Did the goals seem achievable in that time?
Speak with students about name of the lesson Road to… What territories representatives wanted to unify after the War? Explain that people which inhabited regions of Austro-Hungary(Serbs, Croats and Slovenes) as planned should unite with people of Serbia and Montenegro. Show territories on history or geography map.
Beside Serbian government the same idea was supported by representatives of ‘’Yugoslav board’’. Members of the board were prominent figures and representatives of all three nations who lived in Austro-Hungary and who believed in idea of unification. Most prominent were: Ante Trumbić, Ivan Meštrović, Frano Supilo… The board was founded in Paris in 1915. Pay special attention on territories that are mentioned in the text as well as explanations. Speak about actions of members of the board in different countries.
Beside representatives of the Yugoslav board important role in unification process had intellectuals from Serbia as well as Southern Slav emigrants in neutral and allied states. Read selected text as example:

Last text that should be read and analyzed is Corfu declaration, from 20.7.1917 signed by Serbian government president Nikola Pašić and Ante Trumbić in the name of Yugoslav board. This declaration was plan of unification and future organization of common state of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.

At following part of lesson inform students about final steps of making a new state. Final part of lesson (5 minutes)
Write on the blackboard that Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovens was founded on 1st December 1918 in Belgrade. First King was King Petar I Karađorđević.
Ask students what were expectations of nations from this state based on the material used in lesson? Did the state created fulfilled that expectations?

Educational standards:
Basic level: Student is able to name most important events and processes from national history, recognizes historical space on history map. Student can interpret narrative from history and makes a report of research. Recognizes historical dimension of contemporary phenomenon and process.
Medium level: Student explains and connect persons, processes, phenomenon, events from national history, analyzes prejudices, stereotypes, propaganda and other forms of subjective interpretation of history in older and contemporary sources of information. Students are making difference between contemporary and historical context.

Advanced level: Student understand and analyzes change of history space in different periods, with use of history, geography or political map. Student critically observe important processes, events and persons from national history. Student analyzes modern events but with historical context and based on results makes conclusions.
